TORISHÉJU SS24:
FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN (ANNOUNCEMENT FILM)

THE PROCESS The designer cited the dark, futurist 90s R&B of Timbaland, Aaliyah and 112 as the collection's main musical touchstone. In this theme, I set out to marry the haunted, sexy atmosphere of these references with a driving rhythm that synched with the visuals and helped tell the collection's story.

TORISHÉJU SS24:
FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN (RUNWAY SHOW)

THE PROCESS The designer's concept for the 'Fire on the Mountain' runway score was a suite of tracks built around samples of 'Hot Like Fire' by Aaliyah. Mine and Lauren Duffus' composition moved with the arc of the show from beatless chamber music to Grime- and Footwork-influenced passages, the intensity peaking as Naomi Campbell emerged wearing the collection's first look. Aaliyah's voice features throughout, as both a melodic base and a percussive element. This helped us maintain a through line linking the score's shifting moods and changes of pace.

DREAMING ELI SS22:

DISCOVERYLAB PRESENTS x TONI&GUY x LONDON FASHION WEEK

THE PROCESS The brief for this film was to remix an original track by the designer featuring their own vocals. My version needed to evoke both the glamour of the collection and its unique staging against the walls of a derelict mansion. I chopped Elisa's voice into fragments, pitch-shifting and reversing longer notes to create a looped lead melody. I then used "throwaway" excerpts from her session – breaths, pauses, the tails of words – to build an intimate soundscape of whispers and gasps. I set the vocals against white noise, feedback, and distorted keys, aiming to bring out the ghostly beauty of the house and Elisa's three models.

TORISHÉJU FW21

THE PROCESS The score for the digital portfolio showcasing CHIMERA, the debut collection by TORISHÉJU, is part musical ident, part ambient soundscape. Warped vocals and detuned strings introduce the piece and establish an atmosphere of creeping unease. The ambient sequence which follows is a sound collage featuring original synth work, field recordings and half-buried, reverberating samples. As a whole, it aims to distil and explore the collection's themes of body horror and hypertrophy. The suite was later used to soundtrack the CHIMERA exhibition, held at Alexander McQueen's Sarabande Foundation installation space.
